Why Does Globalization Fuel Populism? Economics, Culture, and the Rise of Right-Wing Populism

There is compelling evidence that globalization shocks, often working through culture and identity, have played an important role in driving up support for populist movements, particularly of the right-wing kind. I start with empirical analysis 2016 presidential election United States to show globalization-related attitudinal variables were correlates switch Trump. then provide a conceptual framework identifies four distinct channels which can stimulate populism, two each on demand supply sides politics. evaluate literature help this framework, discussing trade, financial globalization, immigration separately. conclude review by some apparently anomalous cases populists been against, rather than favor of, trade protection.
